College Kumar

– Review

Sandalwood director Hari Santhosh has remade his own film ‘College Kumar’ in Tamil under the same title. While he has retained the same story, but the treatment and some of the content has been tweaked to suit the Tamil audience.

Coming to the story, it is about two friends. One is rich and the other is poor. The poor child cannot attend college as his parents are not able to afford it.

The rich ends up as a leading professional while the poor one becomes a peon. Hence, he (Prabhu) vows to make his own son a big man by giving him good education.

A careful and loving upbringing ensures that the Kumar (Rahul Vijay) is a good student and the all-rounder right through school. But the pressure at home compels him to become quite the rebel.

Though he pretends to be the devoted and hardworking son at home, Kumar and his parents face the real situation after he gets debarred for cheating in exams.

Following this, the tables turn, and the father and the son take on each other’s roles. What happens next forms the crux.

Prabhu has played the role originally essayed by P Ravi Shankar, while Madhoo (Madhubala of ‘Roja’ fame) has played the role that Shruthi had essayed.

Rahul Vijay and Priya Vadlamani have played the young lead pair, while the supporting cast includes Manobala, Nasser and Chams. All the actors have done justice to their respective roles.

Qutub-E- Kirpaa, who are students of music composer AR Rahman’s KM College of Music & Technology, have composed the music which is good.

The movie, a family and college entertainer, is a safe bet for the audience. The film has its drawbacks, though. But it can be watched with all members of the family.
