Actress Trisha is reportedly being considered to portray former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the upcoming biographical film ‘Puratchi Thalaivar MGR’, according to reports. The project will focus on the life and legacy of legendary actor and politician MG Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, with actor JM Bashir set to play the lead role.
Bashir, who is known for portraying political figures in films such as ‘Desiya Thalaivar’, is expected to bring MGR’s journey to the screen, covering his early years, rise as a cinema icon and eventual entry into politics. The film is also expected to explore his influence on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
Trisha’s reported association with the project has generated considerable interest, given Jayalalithaa’s close political association with MGR and her subsequent rise as one of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent leaders. However, the actress’s casting has not been officially confirmed, and discussions regarding the role are reportedly still underway.
According to reports, Bashir believes Trisha would be a suitable choice for the character. He also reportedly mentioned that his daughter is friends with the actress and is currently working with her on another film. Whether Trisha will eventually take up the role remains to be seen.
The biopic is expected to feature several other important figures from Tamil Nadu’s political history, including former Chief Ministers CN Annadurai and M Karunanidhi. Their inclusion could provide a wider picture of the political developments that shaped MGR’s career and legacy.
The filmmakers are reportedly in the process of finalising key members of the cast and crew. The director and music composer have not yet been announced, while Bashir has indicated that principal photography is expected to begin soon in Ramapuram, Chennai.
MGR remains one of Tamil Nadu’s most celebrated cultural and political figures. After establishing himself as a leading star in Tamil cinema, he founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and served as Chief Minister from 1977 until his death in 1987. Jayalalithaa, who rose to prominence as his co-star before entering politics, eventually took over the party’s leadership and became Chief Minister herself.
If Trisha’s casting is confirmed, her portrayal of Jayalalithaa could become one of the film’s most closely watched aspects. For now, audiences will have to wait for an official announcement as the team prepares to bring MGR’s extraordinary journey to the big screen.
