“They even targeted our children”: Chinmayi opens up about years of online abuse

Chinmayi Sripaada has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of sustained online harassment, revealing that the abuse directed at her family eventually drove her husband, filmmaker Rahul Ravindran, away from the social media platform X.

In a video message, the singer and voice actor said discussions on sexual violence must also address the culture that enables it. She argued that misogynistic humour, sexist remarks, revenge pornography and abusive online behaviour are part of a broader pattern that normalises violence against women.

Reflecting on her own experience, Chinmayi said she has faced years of gender-based insults and personal attacks because of her advocacy for survivors of sexual abuse. She recalled that even speaking about teaching children the importance of consent attracted a wave of criticism and online trolling.

According to her, Rahul also became a frequent target after publicly supporting her and speaking on issues related to gender equality. She said many trolls questioned or mocked him simply because he stood by his wife.

Chinmayi further alleged that the harassment escalated after Rahul commented that isolated crimes against men should not be equated with the widespread, systemic violence faced by women. She claimed the abuse eventually extended to their children, with some users posting disturbing messages wishing harm upon them.

Calling for greater awareness about online toxicity, Chinmayi said conversations around consent and women’s safety must go beyond isolated incidents and confront the attitudes that fuel abuse.
