Chinmayi questions TVK’s association with rapper Vedan, cites past misconduct allegations

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has raised concerns over the recent interaction between Tamil Nadu’s ruling party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leaders and rapper Vedan, urging political parties to be mindful when extending public support to individuals who have faced serious allegations in the past.

Reacting to reports of a meeting involving TVK representatives and Minister Rajmohan, Chinmayi stated on social media that she hoped the party would not repeat what she described as a pattern of influential men receiving public platforms despite being accused of sexual harassment or assault.

The singer also shared details of how she first became aware of allegations involving Vedan. According to her, during the COVID-19 period she had been approached for a musical collaboration involving composer Govind Vasantha, writer Muhsin Parari, Vedan, and herself.

Chinmayi said that while participating in a Malayalam-language discussion on Clubhouse, a woman questioned her decision to work with Vedan. At the time, she claimed she was unaware of the allegations because most of the reports and discussions surrounding the issue were available only in Malayalam.

She further stated that she later learned more about the controversy and referred to a public statement issued by Vedan in which he apologised. Following the developments, the proposed project did not move forward. Chinmayi also noted that additional accusations had surfaced against the rapper over time.

The singer added that she had subsequently chosen not to share performance stages with Vedan, citing the allegations associated with him as the reason for her decision. Her remarks have reignited discussions on accountability, public representation, and how institutions and public figures respond to allegations of misconduct.
