Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s first official overseas visit has combined an investment drive with a high-profile motorsport appearance, while his meeting with actor-racer Ajith Kumar has become one of the biggest talking points of the UK trip.
Vijay travelled to Britain with the stated objective of attracting investments to Tamil Nadu and strengthening the State’s links with international companies. During the visit, major investment commitments were announced across automotive manufacturing, power equipment and technology sectors.
The biggest announcement came from Samvardhana Motherson International, which committed around ₹11,000 crore for projects in Tamil Nadu. The investment is expected to generate nearly 7,000 jobs spanning design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly and logistics.
UK-based Wilson Power Solutions also signed an agreement involving ₹300 crore for a manufacturing facility in Tiruvallur, with around 400 jobs expected to be created.
Together, the two major commitments amount to approximately ₹11,300 crore and are projected to create around 7,400 employment opportunities.
Ernst & Young has separately committed ₹1,000 crore towards establishing a Global Capability Centre in Tamil Nadu, which is expected to generate more than 2,000 high-value positions. Swedish company Sigma Technology Group is also expanding its technology and engineering operations in the State.
The investment announcements were accompanied by an unexpected moment that grabbed enormous attention among Tamil cinema fans. At Silverstone, Vijay met Ajith Kumar, who was participating in the Michelin Le Mans Cup through his Ajith RedAnt by Virage team.
The two stars shared a warm embrace before the race, creating a widely celebrated moment after decades of intense rivalry among sections of their respective fan bases.
Vijay was invited as a special guest for the event and waved the ceremonial green flag to start the race. Ajith’s team subsequently finished 38th overall.
Vijay also reportedly gifted Ajith a miniature racing car, while Ajith reciprocated with a signed helmet. Actress Trisha Krishnan was also present at the venue, adding further star power to the occasion.
Vijay’s presence at the circuit also drew significant attention from Tamil fans in the UK. Videos and photographs from the venue showed the Chief Minister greeting supporters before entering the racing arena and interacting with the crowd.
His appearance alongside Ajith transformed what was primarily a motorsport event into a major Tamil cultural moment, with the reunion quickly becoming a talking point across social media and news platforms.
Despite the enormous attention generated by the Silverstone appearance, the primary stated objective of Vijay’s UK visit remains investment promotion.
The Tamil Nadu government has highlighted the MoUs signed during the trip as evidence of growing international interest in the State’s manufacturing, technology and engineering sectors.
At the same time, the visit has triggered political debate in Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties questioning aspects of the trip, including its purpose, expenses and the visibility of investment-related meetings. The government, meanwhile, has pointed to the investment commitments secured during the visit.
With investment agreements, a high-profile Silverstone appearance, interactions with Tamil fans and the much-discussed Vijay-Ajith reunion, the UK trip has become one of the most closely watched overseas visits by a Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in recent times.
