The hill story of Kollywood – F’day Spl. Article by Naveen

Summer has already started in Chennai and people are feeling the heat. With schools expected to declare summer holidays shortly, people have turned their attention to hill stations as summer retreats. Let us take a look into some of the Kollywood movies which have hills as their background.

Thaen:

The film narrates the tale of an uneducated young rural beekeeper facing seemingly insurmountable challenges when his wife is diagnosed with a rare disease. M Sukumar’s cinematography stands out in the movie, thanks to the breathtaking shots, capturing the beauty of Kurinji hills.

Merkku Thodarchi Malai:

The story of MTM is about simple people living at the foothills of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu – Kerala border who work in the cardamom estates, their struggles, and the politics that surrounds them.  It is Theni Eswar’s mind-blowing cinematography that is the high point of the movie. His breathtaking visuals take the story forward, capturing perfectly the vision of the director. Be it the bird’s eye view of the valleys or the changing climatic seasons, or the movements up and down the hilly terrain, it is a visual splendor.

Thumba :

Hari and Umapathy are painters who have come to Top Slip for a painting job. Varsha comes to the place hoping to take photographs of a tiger. Meanwhile, Thumbaa, a tiger, has crossed over to this side of the mountain range from Kerala with its cub, and a gang of poachers, led by the forest officer, are plotting to capture it. The movie is shot  inside the forests of Idukki, Vagamon and Kumili. The cinematography lets you visualize the forest through light and dark.

Mynaa:

Vidharth and Amala Paul are childhood friends. Suruli is attracted to Myna and it doesn’t take long enough for him to recognize that feeling as love. Soon enough, when Myna’s mother realises that her little girl is in love with a mucky waster she decides to marry her off to a man with better prospects. She also lodges a complaint in the police station against Suruli for attempting to murder her and Suruli is imprisoned. What happens next forms the rest of the story. Sukumar’s camera goes to town with the locales, the forest scenes must have been difficult to shoot.

Kaadan:

Rana Daggubati is the proud recipient of the title The Forest Man of India, his ancestors have given their lands to the Government to preserve the forest. Like his parents and grandparents, Rana dedicates his life to birds, animals, and trees in the forest. Everything goes well until Anant Mahadevan, the environmental minister plans to build a posh township in the forest. Was Rana able to save the elephant corridor forms the rest of the story. AR Ashok Kumar’s splendid cinematography is one of the major highlights of the film. He has captured the jungle beautifully and naturally.
