Special Project
After the release of ‘Naa Ready’ from ‘Leo’, a police complaint was filed against Vijay for allegedly promoting drugs in the song. Following this, the film’s team has made a small change in the song.
After criticism, the film’s team has added a smoking disclaimer to the song on YouTube. However, no scenes have been removed from the song. The disclaimer also appears in a few scenes.
This is not the first time that a film’s song has landed in controversy. Let us take a look at some of the songs that were caught in trouble during the time of their release.
Pathala Pathala:
Pathala Pathala from ‘Vikram’ grabbed the headlines due to its controversial lyrics, which allegedly mock the Union government. A few lines from the song go as follows (translated from Tamil to English). “There is no money left in the treasury at a time when diseases are on the rise. Because of the mistakes of the Union Govt, there’s nothing left now. The key now lies with the thief.” Kamal, who has also written “Pathala Pathala”, had used the word ‘Ondriyam’ in the track, which was considered as his commentary against the union government. While the controversial part of the song is still available in the lyrical version of the song, it has been kept out of the video of the song.
Manjanathi Puranam:
‘Karnan’ starring Dhanush spoke about the people from a village and their fight for their rights. Mari Selvaraj’s directorial had a song ‘Pandarathi Purnam’, wherein the word ‘Pandarathi’ indicated a caste. The makers went for a replacement after a few protested against the song, and the song was then titled Manjanathi Puranam. The word Pandarathi was replaced with ‘Manjanathi’.
Mannurunda:
A petition was filed against the makers of Suriya’s ‘Soorari Pottru’ in the Madras High Court, about the song Mannurunda allegedly featuring offensive lines. The petitioner pointed out the lines: “Keezh saadhi udambukulla odurathu saakadaya? Andha mel saadhi kaaranuku rendu kombirundha kaatungaiya”. Later half of the song was trimmed during the filming.
Evan Di Unna Pethan:
Evan Di Unna Pethan from Silambarasan starrer ‘Vaanam’ grabbed the attention of the audience, especially the youngsters. A women’s rights organisation, however, raised questions on the lyrics, as they felt it belittled women. Silambarasan, who had crooned the song, was also under the spotlight, for the same. The case was dismissed later, with no changes.
Open the Tasmac:
Sivakarthikeyan was a rising star during the release of ‘Maan Karate’, and the Anirudh musical had a party song titled Open the Tasmac sung by Deva. The song received criticism from a welfare association because according to them, the word ‘Tasmac’ was misleading especially for youngsters. The word ‘Tasmac’ was replaced with ‘Shutter’, and a new version was shared by the team later.
