New guidelines issued by Union government for OTT platforms

The Central government has announced new Digital Media Ethics Code in a press conference on Thursday chaired by Ravi Shankar Prasad, Law & Justice, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Minister of India, and Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Information & Broadcasting; & Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises.

As part of new rules to regulate social media content, the government will ask the platform to reveal the originator of a message.

The government has also proposed voluntary verification of users and a compliance officer as well as grievance officer. The government has also asked to appoint a 24×7 point of contact.

“As far as OTT platforms are concerned, there should be self-classification of content — 13+, 16+ and A categories. There has to be a mechanism of parental lock and ensuring compliance that children don’t see that,” Prakash Javadekar said.
