In Kamal’s presence, Rashmika steps into M S Subbulakshmi’s world in new musical biopic

The extraordinary life of legendary vocalist M S Subbulakshmi is headed to the big screen, with Rashmika Mandanna set to portray the celebrated singer in a newly launched biopic.

The film, titled ‘M.S – A Legacy On Screen’, was officially launched in Chennai on Wednesday at the Music Academy, coinciding with Subbulakshmi’s 110th birth anniversary.

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan attended the launch and gave the first clap, marking the formal beginning of the project. Producer Allu Aravind was also present at the event.

Rashmika will take on the challenging role of a musician whose influence extended well beyond the Carnatic music tradition. The project is being directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, while Anirudh Ravichander is associated with the film’s music.

The announcement was timed to coincide with a significant milestone in Subbulakshmi’s legacy. The makers have positioned the film as a celebration of her life, music and enduring cultural influence.

Speaking at the event, Rashmika described the opportunity as a deeply meaningful one. She expressed gratitude for being chosen to portray Subbulakshmi and reflected on the powerful emotional impact of the singer’s voice.

Kamal Haasan, meanwhile, recalled his own association with Subbulakshmi and spoke about having met several legendary figures of Indian music during his career. He had previously hoped to feature her voice in his film ‘Hey Ram’, though she could not participate because of ill health.

The film is expected to explore different chapters of Subbulakshmi’s personal and musical journey and introduce her remarkable story to a new generation.
