Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s visit to the United Kingdom is officially focused on investments, industrial partnerships and trade opportunities. Yet one event outside the conference halls has captured unusual public attention: his scheduled appearance at the Silverstone circuit, where actor Ajith Kumar will be competing in the Michelin Le Mans Cup.
The organisers have invited Vijay as a special guest to support Indian drivers and perform the ceremonial start of the race. That has created a striking image for Tamil audiences: one of cinema’s longest-running rivals standing trackside while the other takes to the circuit.
For decades, Vijay and Ajith represented two distinct schools of stardom. Vijay built a vast network of supporters that gradually evolved into a social and political force. Ajith, on the other hand, consistently distanced himself from organised fan associations and repeatedly urged admirers to focus on their own families, education and careers.

Silverstone also carries administrative significance for the Tamil Nadu government. Vijay has announced plans for a Motor Sports City in the state, and officials accompanying him are expected to study the circuit’s infrastructure, safety systems and links to tourism and the automobile sector.
