Actor Ajith Kumar has welcomed the Tamil Nadu government’s plan to establish a dedicated Motor Sports City, saying the proposed project could give a major boost to motorsport in the state and across India.
Ajith, who has pursued racing alongside his acting career, praised the government’s efforts to encourage youngsters to take up sports and create structured pathways for emerging talent.
The actor said the proposed motorsport facility was particularly encouraging for racing enthusiasts. Drawing inspiration from Neil Armstrong’s famous words, he described the initiative as a modest beginning that could eventually have a much wider impact on Indian motorsport.
Ajith’s involvement in racing dates back to the early 2000s. He has competed in Formula BMW Asia, British Formula 3 and the FIA Formula 2 Championship. Despite the demands of his film career, he has continued to maintain a strong connection with motorsport.
In 2025, he took his passion for racing further by launching Ajith Kumar Racing. The team competed in the Michelin 24H Dubai and secured a podium finish in its category. Ajith has also expressed an ambition to contribute to the sport as a team owner rather than limiting his involvement to driving.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the Motor Sports City proposal in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on September 3. The planned facility is expected to feature a world-class racing circuit, training infrastructure and other amenities aimed at developing young motorsport talent.
The state government also hopes the project will help Tamil Nadu attract major domestic and international racing events, potentially including Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 competitions.
With Ajith now publicly backing the proposal, the project has also gained attention from one of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent figures associated with professional motorsport.
