A heartfelt musical drama
“Charukesi”
– Review
‘Charukesi’ is a musical family drama that explores memory, relationships and the importance of understanding one’s roots. The film revolves around a celebrated Carnatic musician, played by Y.Gee. Mahendra, who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As his memory begins to fade, the audience gradually learns about his life and legacy through the perspectives of those around him.
The narrative also follows his son, who does not share a particularly close relationship with his father. The film ultimately asks whether the protagonist can overcome his condition and reconnect with the people who matter most.
Y.Gee. Mahendra delivers a deeply sincere performance, drawing from his vast experience to bring dignity and emotional weight to the character. One of the film’s most moving moments comes when he sings, leaving a lasting impact on the audience. His portrayal forms the emotional backbone of the film.
Samuthirakani and Sathyaraj make brief but effective appearances, making the most of their limited screen time. Suhasini and Thalaivasal Vijay perform their roles competently, while Ramya Pandian lends adequate support to the narrative.
Carnatic music plays a crucial role in shaping the film’s atmosphere. Composer Deva provides a melodious soundtrack that enhances the emotional beats of the story. Sanjay’s cinematography may be restrained in scale, but it serves the film’s requirements without becoming a distraction.
With dialogues written by Pa. Vijay, who has also penned the lyrics, ‘Charukesi’ benefits from a theme that resonates across generations. Director Suresh Krissna presents the story as a musical drama with a meaningful message about understanding and appreciating the lives and sacrifices of parents. While the screenplay could have been sharper and more engaging in places, the film succeeds in delivering its emotional core.
Overall, ‘Charukesi’ is a sincere and touching drama elevated by Y.Gee. Mahendraa’s performance and its strong musical foundation. It may not be flawless, but it is a film worth watching at least once for its heartfelt storytelling and emotional appeal.
