A science-backed crime mystery with an unusual premise

‘Beep’ attempts to give the crime thriller genre a scientific twist by combining a murder investigation with an unusual supernatural-looking ability.
Directed by L. Shanmugasundaram, the film stars Raghav Ranganathan and Yamini Lakshmanan in the lead roles, along with a supporting cast that includes several familiar faces.
The story follows Raghav Ranganathan, an MBA student who possesses a strange ability connected to photographs. Whenever he looks at a photograph, he can seemingly enter the moment captured within it and discover details about what happened around that time.
While his friends believe the ability could be a gift from God, Raghav is convinced that there is a scientific explanation behind it. His interest in the ability becomes particularly important when he becomes acquainted with Yamini Lakshmanan’s character, a sex worker with whom he develops a close friendship.
Raghav grows increasingly concerned about Yamini, but tragedy strikes when she falls to her death from the third floor of an apartment building. The investigation soon establishes that her death was a murder. However, with crucial evidence missing, the police struggle to make significant progress.
Raghav decides to use his unusual ability to uncover the circumstances behind Yamini’s death and identify the person responsible. His efforts do not immediately produce the answers he is looking for. At the same time, the police continue their investigation through conventional methods, attempting to build a case based on evidence.
The central mystery revolves around who killed Yamini, why she was targeted and whether Raghav or the police will succeed in uncovering the truth first.
Raghav Ranganathan performs his lead role with confidence and carries the investigation-driven portions effectively. Yamini Lakshmanan makes a strong impression as the woman at the centre of the murder mystery, bringing emotional depth to a character whose life becomes crucial to the story.
Director L. Shanmugasundaram also appears in the film as Professor Chidambaram and delivers a noteworthy performance. IT Acharya, who plays actress Nayana Kapoor, along with Prerna Khanna, Arun Mohan, Shravan Ramakrishnan and Juhi Sharma as Raghav’s friends, contribute well to the proceedings.
Nithish as the police inspector and Balaji as the sub-inspector fit comfortably into the investigative portions, with the supporting actors understanding the requirements of their respective roles.
Pradeep Padma Kumar’s cinematography, Prashanth Vihari’s music and the editing by Abhishek provide solid technical support. The visual treatment complements the film’s mystery-oriented atmosphere, while the editing helps maintain momentum as the investigation develops.
The biggest advantage of ‘Beep’ is its attempt to approach a murder mystery from a science-oriented perspective. Rather than relying entirely on familiar investigative tropes, the film builds its central mystery around Raghav’s unusual ability and gradually connects it with the police investigation.
‘Beep’ may appeal to viewers looking for a crime thriller with an unconventional premise and a scientific angle. The film’s performances and technical work further support its attempt to present the mystery in an engaging manner.
