Singeetham Srinivasa Rao: A filmmaker who never stopped experimenting

Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, one of Indian cinema’s most adventurous filmmakers, has died in Chennai at the age of 94 following health complications.

The veteran director passed away at Kauvery Hospital on Saturday night, bringing the curtain down on a career that stretched across more than five decades and several Indian languages.

What made Singeetham stand apart was his refusal to follow a predictable filmmaking formula. He moved comfortably between comedy, fantasy, science fiction, drama, biography and experimental storytelling, often attempting ideas that were unusual for their time.

His filmography includes memorable works such as ‘Pushpaka Vimanam’, ‘Aditya 369’, ‘Mayuri’, ‘Bhairava Dweepam’, ‘Apoorva Sagodharargal’, ‘Michael Madana Kama Rajan’ and ‘Raja Paarvai’. His 1987 film ‘Pushpaka Vimanam’, particularly noted for its absence of conventional dialogue, remains one of the most celebrated examples of visual storytelling in Indian cinema. ‘Aditya 369’ similarly earned a special place among Indian science-fiction films for its time-travel concept.

Singeetham’s journey in cinema began under the guidance of legendary filmmaker K.V. Reddy. He later established himself as a director with a body of work that crossed Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam cinema.

His association with leading stars also produced several memorable films. His collaborations with Kamal Haasan and Dr Rajkumar became an important part of his career, while his films continued to attract audiences with their distinctive storytelling.

Remarkably, age did little to diminish his enthusiasm for filmmaking. His final directorial venture, ‘Sing Geetham’, was released in 2026, making his return to the director’s chair at such an advanced age a remarkable final chapter to his career. The musical fantasy was produced by Nag Ashwin.

Even after decades in the industry, Singeetham remained willing to experiment with form and technology. His final film served as another example of the creative curiosity that had defined his work from the beginning.

With his passing, Indian cinema has lost a filmmaker whose career was built not simply on commercial success, but on the constant pursuit of new ideas.
