It is Tamil month ‘Karthigai’ and this is the time of the year where people put the holy malai for Sabarimala. The concept of putting malai to Sabarimala has been used in several Tamil Cinemas as a major background to take the movies forward. Let us take a look at some of the movies where putting ‘Ayyappan’ played a major part in the movie.
‘Pistha’:
The movie directed by K S Ravikumar is about how Karthi, a devotee of lord Ayyappan is provided with an opportunity to work at an estate in Ooty. Circumstances lead him to get married to Nagma. But, only after this Karthi reveals that he is an ex-convict and his polite nature so far was due to his fasting for lord Ayyappa. What happens next forms the core plot of the movie.
‘Karuppasamy Kuthagaitharar’:
Directed by debutant Murthy, the movie is about Karan, a carefree man who works as a contractor for cycle stands. However, his life changes when he falls in love with Meenakshi. But believing the promise made by his family, Karan stops seeing her and decides to go on pilgrimage to Sabarimala. But, Meenakshi’s family sees this as an opportunity to get her married to someone else. However, Karan comes to know about this and what he does after that is the rest of the story.
‘Boys’:
The movie directed by Shankar is about the life of six youngsters, who experience the downfalls of adolescent life. The lead pair of Siddharth and Genelia get married and they work odd jobs to earn money, and eventually form a band called Boys to raise funds for their education. The idea of doing a devotional song will be given by their friend Manikandan. Their first big break comes in the form of an Ayyappan song. This song becomes a huge hit which inturn will lead to the change of fortunes in their life.
‘3’:
‘3’ is a romantic psychological thriller film written and directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth. Dhanush and Shruti Haasan are childhood sweethearts who eventually get married. As they grow up, so does their affinity for each other, and despite opposition from the elders, they tie the knot. When they start a fresh life, problems start to grow up. In one situation Dhanush has to live separately from Shruthi Haasan and thus he starts fasting for Ayyappan and ultimately embarking on the pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
‘Priyamana Thozhi’:
Madhavan and Sridevi have been friends since childhood. They live in Ooty and share no love interest. Madhavan falls in love with Jyothika, a rich girl whom he marries, and although Sridevi’s closeness to Madhavan initially irritates Jyothika, she subsequently accepts it. Sridevi falls in love with Vineeth, a cricketer who is hoping for a place in the Indian cricket team and whose main rival happens to be Madhavan. In one of the sequences Sridevi will be worried that her father Manivannan will spoil his health because of his drinking habit. She tells the same to Madhavan, who ultimately puts malai to Sabarimala and thus prevents Manivannan from drinking.
