Sun Pictures moves High Court against ‘Coolie’s A certificate
Sun Pictures has taken legal action against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for issuing an ‘A’ certificate to their latest film, Coolie, starring Superstar Rajinikanth.
The company filed a civil appeal in the Madras High Court, arguing that the film’s level of violence does not warrant a restricted ‘A’ rating, which limits viewership to those over 18.
This is the first Rajinikanth film in over three decades to receive such a certificate. The production house’s appeal contends that the rating is unwarranted, especially when compared to other films like the ‘KGF’ franchise and Beast that received a ‘U/A’ certificate despite having similar or higher levels of violence.
Sun Pictures asserts that the ‘A’ certificate is hurting the film’s box office prospects by alienating a large portion of Rajinikanth’s family audience and has requested the court to direct the CBFC to downgrade the rating to ‘U/A’. The case is currently being heard by the Madras High Court.
