Science fiction movies and Tamil cinema – F’day Spl. Article by Naveen

‘Maanadu’ is released today and has received a tremendous response from movie buffs. It is not just the story, but the science fiction elements in the movie that has grabbed the attention of the fans.

Let us take a look at some of the science fiction movies that had a good run in the Tamil cinema industry.

1) Endhiran:

Rajni plays dual roles. One is a scientist and the other is a Robot. Scientist Rajni creates a Robot with artificial intelligence. But it falls in love with Aishwarya Rai, the scientist’s lover. Knowing about the extraordinary intelligence of the Robot the villains try to get control of the Robot. What happens next forms the rest of the story. The movie was a huge hit with spectacular visuals.

2)  Indru Netru Naalai:

The movie directed by Ravikumar has Vishnu, Karunakaran and Mia George in lead roles. The movie story is about the Time Travel machine. Elango (Vishnu) a guy who wants to achieve big in his life. Karunakaran plays the role of a fake astrologer friend of Elango. The movie was received well by the audience and had a good run in theaters.

3) 24:

The flick is written and directed by Vikram Kumar and  features Suriya, Samantha in the lead roles. ‘24’ is the story of a watch, with which the owner can travel to the past and future and control the time. The movie was released amid much expectations and received mixed reactions. However, the concept which was handled was much appreciated. Suriya as Athreya was terrific in his role.

4) New:

Directed by S J Suryah, the movie is about an eight-year-old kid who transforms into a 28-year-old youth. Though he is physically a youth, his mind is of a kid. During the day, he is a kid and at night he turns into the youth. Forced to marry Simran, Suryah alternates between two roles till he becomes the father of a baby boy. By then his dual life is exposed and how he copes up with his new found status forms the climax. The movie became controversial for the theme at the time of its release.

5) Dasavatharam:

The plot of Dasavathaaram revolves around bringing together the lives of several individuals beginning with the 12th century and ending with the 21st century; the main person being a research scientist who develops a bio-weapon and makes sure that it is not acquired by a group of terrorists. The movie had Kamal Haasan playing ten different characters.
