Rajinikanth reveals why he passed on ‘Baashha 2’ and ‘Petta 2’ for ‘Jailer 2’

Rajinikanth has opened up about his decision to return for ‘Jailer 2’, revealing that he previously rejected sequel ideas for ‘Baashha’ and ‘Petta’ because he was not convinced they offered enough scope for a fresh story.

Speaking at the pre-release event for ‘Jailer 2’, titled Jailer 2 Super Show and streamed on Sun NXT, the superstar explained that he generally approaches sequels with caution. He believes a follow-up should offer more than a familiar storyline with a few additional elements.

According to Rajinikanth, Sathya Movies repeatedly approached him with plans for ‘Baashha 2’, drawing inspiration from an idea proposed by the late producer R. M. Veerappan. He also declined director Karthik Subbaraj’s suggestion for ‘Petta 2’, which would have explored the continuation of Vijay Sethupathi’s character.

The actor eventually found a promising direction for a sequel while rewatching ‘Jailer’ after its OTT premiere. Two elements caught his attention: Varma’s warning about a much larger network operating behind Tiger and the mysterious sequence featuring three containers of goods.

Rajinikanth felt these details opened the door to a bigger story, giving the proposed sequel a strong narrative foundation.

Director Nelson Dilipkumar was initially hesitant about making another instalment, as he felt the first film had already explored much of its potential. However, after spending around a month developing the concept, he returned with a more substantial idea that convinced the actor.

‘Jailer 2’ reunites Rajinikanth with Nelson and music composer Anirudh Ravichander. The film also features S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Jatin Sarna, along with returning cast members Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa.

The much-anticipated sequel is scheduled to hit theatres on October 15, with expectations high for the return of Rajinikanth as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian.
