Acclaimed filmmaker R. Balki is preparing to enter Tamil cinema as a director for the first time. The announcement came through a special tribute he penned celebrating the remarkable five-decade career of legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja. While details about the project remain confidential, Balki revealed that Ilaiyaraaja will create eight original songs for the film, promising audiences a music-driven cinematic experience.
The upcoming venture will mark the reunion of Balki and Ilaiyaraaja after more than a decade. The duo previously collaborated on notable Hindi films such as ‘Cheeni Kum’, ‘Paa’ and ‘Shamitabh’, where the composer’s music played a significant role in shaping the films’ emotional appeal. Balki indicated that the new project would showcase Ilaiyaraaja’s signature musical brilliance on a grand scale.
Reflecting on his association with the maestro, Balki spoke about Ilaiyaraaja’s extraordinary speed and instinctive approach to music creation. He described the composer’s process as effortless and almost magical, noting how quickly he can understand a situation and transform it into a complete musical piece. Balki also expressed admiration for the veteran musician’s ability to compose background scores after watching only limited portions of a film.
The filmmaker further shared his belief that Ilaiyaraaja’s immense workload in South Indian cinema left little room for a sustained career in Bollywood. According to Balki, the composer was constantly occupied with multiple projects, and his involvement alone often enhanced a film’s commercial appeal and market value.
Balki was last seen behind the camera with ‘Ghoomer’ in 2023, featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Saiyami Kher and Angad Bedi. His Tamil debut is expected to generate considerable interest, particularly because of its collaboration with one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated composers.
Meanwhile, Ilaiyaraaja continues to be associated with several high-profile Tamil projects. These include director Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s upcoming film ‘Pocket Novel’ starring Vijay Sethupathi, director Karthik Subbaraj’s tenth feature film, and ‘Manjanathi’, the next project from director Mari Selvaraj, which features Kayadu Lohar and Priyanka Mohan in leading roles.
