With Rajinikanth’s ‘Vettaiyan’ which released this week revolving around encounters, let us take a look at some notable Tamil movies centered around police encounters, examining their impact on audiences and society.

‘Khaka Khaka’:

Directed by Gautham Menon, the movie has Surya and Jyothika in the lead roles. It is about a team of cops who are working to eliminate the notorious gangs in the city. They encounter a wanted gangster and this leads to a series of the events where the cops and their families are affected. Music for the movie is by Harris Jayaraj.

‘Anjathey’:

Written and directed by Mysskin, the film stars Narain, Prasanna, Ajmal Ameer, and Vijayalakshmi in prominent roles.
Sathyavan and Kripakaran are close friends living opposite each other in the police quarters in Chennai. Sathya is a rowdy, wasting his time drinking merrily and getting involved in petty fights. Though he and Kripa pass college with a first-class degree, Sathya has no interest in joining the police force. But due to the turn of events Sathya becomes a cop and Kripa becomes a gangster. The series of events leads to Sathya encountering Kripa to save the girls kidnapped by him.

‘Vikram Vedha’:

Directed by Pushkar and Gayathri, the movie follows the story of Vikram an encounter specialist who raids a place killing all the gangsters who work for a dreaded gangster Vedha but fails to get any information on his hide out. When Vedha voluntarily surrenders, he offers to tell Vikram a story, throwing Vikram’s life into disarray. Vijay Sethupathi and Madhavan play prominent roles in the movie which became a sensational hit.

‘Visaranai’:

Directed by Vettriamaran, ‘Visaranai’ is about a group of immigrants who are tortured to plead guilty for a crime they didn’t commit. When a policeman from their hometown helps to set them free, they agree to do him a favour in return, unaware of the trouble they are getting themselves into. Attakathi Dinesh, Anandhi, Samuthirakani and Aadukalam Murugadoss play prominent roles in the movie which has music by G V Prakash.

‘Sethupathi’:

Arun Kumar’s Sethupathi is a film that moves from reel to reel on the shoulders of actor Vijay Sethupathi.The story begins with a man in khaki being burnt alive and Sethupathi bent on punishing the guilty. But when an accident involving a teenager shatters Sethupathi’s clean image, and barricades his way towards netting the criminal, a kind of lord in Madurai, the policeman has to plot a completely different script.
