The Madras High Court has dismissed a plea from the makers of Superstar Rajinikanth’s film ‘Coolie’ to re-certify the film with a U/A rating.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had granted the film an ‘A’ certificate due to its violent action sequences.
The producers, Sun TV Network, argued that fight scenes are a necessary part of Tamil cinema and that the film was suitable for a broader audience, especially after making cuts to obscene language and drinking scenes.
The CBFC, however, maintained that the ‘A’ certificate was unanimously agreed upon by the board and that a U/A certificate would require the removal of all violent scenes, which the filmmakers had declined to do.
This marks the first time in over three decades that a Rajinikanth film has received an adults-only rating, the last being 1989’s ‘Siva’.
