Hiphop Tamizha Adhi is set to return as both director and lead actor with ‘Meesaya Murukku 2’, which is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on September 25.
Speaking at the film’s pre-release event, Adhi explained that the sequel takes a very different approach from the original. While the first ‘Meesaya Murukku’ drew heavily from his own life, the new film expands its focus to musicians and the realities of choosing music as a profession.
According to Adhi, ‘Meesaya Murukku 2’ explores the aspirations, hardships, personal journeys and emotions of people who build their lives around music. He described the film as a wider story that can connect with audiences beyond his own experiences.
A significant portion of the film also revolves around Gana performers and artistes. Their songs often emerge from their own lives, struggles and surroundings, and the film attempts to bring those experiences to the forefront.
Adhi said the stories of Gana artistes form an important part of the film and reflect how many performers turn their personal experiences into music while making a living through their art.
The sequel also features a new father character. In the first instalment, the role was played by the late actor Vivek, who portrayed Adhi’s father.
Adhi acknowledged that nobody could replace Vivek but explained that the new film moves across three different periods and therefore required another important father figure. He said he believed choreographer and actor Baba Bhaskar was well suited for the part.
Baba Bhaskar was reportedly unsure about accepting the acting assignment initially, but eventually agreed after placing his trust in Adhi and his vision for the character.
Adhi has also expressed confidence in Baba Bhaskar’s performance, suggesting that the film could establish him more firmly as an actor in Tamil cinema.
‘Meesaya Murukku 2’ also stars Ketika Sharma as Laila Singh, a dancer who arrives in Chennai from Punjab. The film brings together music, dance, romance and ambition while focusing on people attempting to make a life through their artistic talents.
