Director Atlee has addressed speculation about a possible collaboration with Rajinikanth, saying that although he has an idea in mind, he has not yet started working on his next project.
Atlee was speaking to the press while promoting Vijay Sethupathi’s latest release ‘Baththa’, which he has presented, with his wife Priya Atlee serving as one of the producers.
When asked if a film with Rajinikanth was part of his plans, Atlee initially indicated that he had an idea for the superstar. However, he explained that he generally prefers to focus entirely on the film he is currently making before turning his attention to his next venture.
The filmmaker pointed out that he did not begin planning ‘Theri’ while making ‘Raja Rani’, nor did he work on the idea for ‘Mersal’ during the production of ‘Theri’. He follows a similar approach with every project, he said.
Atlee also revealed that he intends to take a two-month break after completing and releasing ‘Raaka’. During that period, he plans to assess the film and examine what worked and what did not before deciding on his next move.
Meanwhile, ‘Baththa’ has reportedly made a strong start at the box office. According to Sacnilk figures cited in reports, the Vijay Sethupathi-starrer has collected around Rs 10 crore from the Indian theatrical market so far.
Atlee’s immediate focus remains ‘Raaka’, his first directorial venture in Telugu. The film stars Allu Arjun in the lead and is being produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner. Deepika Padukone is also part of the cast in a significant role.
There has been considerable speculation over whether Hollywood actor Will Smith will appear as the antagonist in the film, although an official confirmation from the makers is still awaited.
‘Raaka’ has also attracted attention for its use of advanced filmmaking technology. The production recently achieved a Guinness World Records recognition in the category for the most people motion-captured in real time.
The film is said to incorporate elements of science fiction and fantasy and will reportedly present Allu Arjun in a distinctly different avatar.
Interestingly, Atlee joked during the interaction that even his producer has not yet asked him about the release date of ‘Raaka’.
For now, the director appears keen to finish his current project before deciding whether his next film will be the much-discussed Rajinikanth collaboration or another story altogether.
