Atlee reveals his big-screen dream: Kamal Haasan and Vijay Sethupathi in ‘Marudhanayagam’

Director Atlee has revealed an ambitious dream that could bring Kamal Haasan and Vijay Sethupathi together in a much-awaited revival of ‘Marudhanayagam’.

Speaking at the success meet of Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Baththa’, Atlee said he has wanted to work with both actors for a long time. He expressed curiosity about how their contrasting acting styles and creative approaches could come together in one film.

Atlee also named ‘Marudhanayagam’ as the project he would particularly like to take up. The filmmaker said he has ideas for developing different aspects of the story and hopes to eventually make the ambitious historical drama with Kamal Haasan and Vijay Sethupathi.

The director indicated that the project would not simply be built around the star power of its cast. Instead, he wants the story itself to remain the biggest attraction.

‘Marudhanayagam’ is a long-discussed Kamal Haasan project that was halted during production and has remained one of the actor-filmmaker’s most ambitious unfinished ventures. Atlee’s comments therefore add an interesting new possibility to the film’s long history.

Atlee’s remarks came as ‘Baththa’, directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan and backed by Atlee, continues to receive attention following its October 2 release. The filmmaker has also spoken about his ambition of taking the film to the Oscars and promoting Tamil cinema on the global stage.
