Actor Arvind Swamy has clarified that he never agreed to star in ‘Anna’, a Malayalam film that veteran director Joshiy planned in the 1990s but never brought to production. The actor recently addressed the long-standing association during a conversation on actor-producer Ramkumar Ganesan’s ‘Truly Ram’ podcast.
The discussion came up following renewed interest in the shelved project after the popularity of ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ (BKU), directed by Girish AD and featuring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju. The film has brought attention back to the song ‘Yavanakathayile Idayakanyake’, originally associated with ‘Anna’.
Arvind Swamy said he had neither listened to the film’s story nor confirmed his involvement. He suggested that a misunderstanding or communication gap might have caused people to believe he was part of the project.
The actor explained that he was relatively new to the industry at the time and was unaware of how his name became connected with the film. He also said he had no knowledge of who might have conveyed the impression that he had agreed to act in it.
When asked about the renewed popularity of ‘Yavanakathayile Idayakanyake’, Arvind acknowledged hearing about the song’s resurgence.
‘Anna’ was envisioned as a romantic drama revolving around a relationship between a Brahmin man and a Christian woman. Arvind Swamy and Sridevi were reportedly planned as the lead pair, but filming never commenced.
Although the movie remained unrealised, its music was recorded. Composer Ouseppachan created the soundtrack, with lyrics by Shibu Chakravarthy, and the songs were released as an album in 1995.
The actor’s recent clarification puts to rest speculation about his involvement in the long-abandoned project while highlighting how its music continues to find new audiences decades later.
