“Rao Bahadur”

Movie Review

‘Rao Bahadur’ is an ambitious psychological drama directed by Venkatesh Maha, featuring a remarkable performance by Satyadev as Ramappa Rao Bahadur, an aging aristocrat haunted by suspicion about his family’s legacy.
The story follows his obsession with uncovering whether his deceased second son was truly his biological child, leading to a layered mystery that unfolds through a non-linear narrative.
The film’s biggest strengths are its stunning visual presentation and technical craftsmanship. The palace settings, elaborate costumes, vibrant song sequences, production design, VFX, and makeup create a rich cinematic experience. Every frame is designed with attention to detail, making the film visually captivating.
The screenplay explores themes such as love, loyalty, family relationships, self-worth, lineage and the consequences of keeping secrets. It mixes psychological drama with subtle humour and wit, encouraging viewers to actively piece together the story. While the non-linear storytelling may require patience and concentration, the emotional and thematic payoff is considered worthwhile.
Satyadev delivers the standout performance, convincingly portraying the character across different stages of life. Deepa Thomas and Vikas Muppala also receive praise for their natural and engaging performances, adding emotional depth to the narrative.
Though the unconventional narrative style may not appeal to everyone, the film is recommended watching  for its unexpected twists and impactful climax, especially on the big screen where its visuals, music, and performances blend well.
