“Padai Thalaivan”

– Review

Shanmuga Pandian, a mahout and potter, lives with his father Kasthuri Raja, his sister, and their beloved elephant, Maniyan.

Burdened by debt, Shanmuga Pandian is forced to rent out Maniyan for weddings and temple festivals.

A turn of events leads to Maniyan being confiscated by forest officials, only to go missing shortly after.

Shanmuga Pandian’s desperate search for his missing elephant forms the initial driving force of the plot.

However, Shanmuga Pandian’s search leads him to Odisha and into the world of Garudan Ram, where he has to save the enslaved villagers. What happens next forms the core plot of the movie.

Director Anbu successfully establishes a heartfelt emotional core in the first half, particularly in depicting the bond between Shanmuga Pandiyan and the elephant.

The initial narrative is well-connected and grounded. He also excels in orchestrating the action sequences, leveraging Shanmuga Pandian’s strengths in this area.

The second half of the movie is filled with mass moments which has worked out well.

Shanmuga Pandian has a commanding screen presence and his execution of action sequences are top notch. His physicality and energy are highlighted as strong points. His potential as an actor is strongly showcased in the movie.

Kasthuri Raja delivers a solid performance. His portrayal helps to establish the initial emotional bond within the family and with the elephant. AI cameo of Vijayakanth was an added boost to the movie.

Yamini Chander as the female lead has done their part well. Graudan Ram portrays the tyrannical villain, bringing the necessary menace to the role.

Actors like Munishkanth and Aruldoss make solid contributions in their respective roles.

Cinematography by S.R. Sathish Kumar, capturing the raw beauty of the forest, also contributes positively to the film’s visual appeal. Ilaiyaraaja’s music adds significant emotional depth.

Rating: 3.6/5
