Middle-class Magic

“Madras Matinee”

Review

The core plot of ‘Madras Matinee’ revolves around an aging science fiction writer played by Sathyaraj.

He is accustomed to crafting fantastical narratives, but his perspective is challenged by his compassionate caretaker.

The caretaker urges him to move away from cosmic fantasies and instead, write about the lives of common people, arguing that their everyday struggles and joys hold unexpected depth and drama.

Reluctantly, the writer begins to chronicle the story of Kaali Venkat, a humble auto driver, and his family. The film then largely unfolds through Kali’s life.

We see him navigating the challenges of being the head of a lower-middle-class family in Chennai, juggling the demands of his job, paying bills, arranging food, and raising his two children.

The film gradually makes the point that middle-class life, far from being boring, is full of adventure, love, and resilience.

Directed by Karthikeyan Mani, the story is simple, focusing on the ordinary, which is deeply moving and engaging. The meta-narrative of the writer learning to appreciate common lives is a unique and effective framing device.

The film successfully captures the rhythm of middle-class life in Madras, making it relatable to audiences.

As far as performances are concerned, Kaali Venkat delivers a natural performance making the character feel more authentic.

Roshni Haripriyan has done her part well and has delivered a neat performance as well.

Rest of the characters including Shelly and Sathyaraj have also given good contributions.

Music by K C Balasarangan adds more soul to the movie, Anand GK’s camerawork is impressive.
