Asthram – Review by Naveen

An interesting crime thriller

Asthram

– Review

A person commits suicide in a strange manner in a hill station. Police Inspector Shyam, who comes to investigate it, realises that there is some mystery behind it.

Then, after learning that suicides in the similar pattern have taken place in two places including Chennai, Shyam asks permission from a higher authority to investigate further.

Shyam starts investigating the deaths but he is not able to find any clue. A series of incidents leads to the suspension of Shyam from duty.

Although he is not on duty, Shyam discovers that there is some connection between the series of suicides. When he tries to find out the complete background of it, many shocking facts come to light.

What is it? Why do suicides happen? Was Shyam able to solve the mystery behind the deaths, forms the core plot of the movie.

Director Aravind Rajagopal has given an interesting crime thriller film with a screenplay based on a story about a Japanese king.

The film’s greatest strength is that the screenplay gives equal importance to all the characters.

Kudos to the director for taking the film to a gripping climax even though the hint about the villain is revealed during the interval.

Shyam has acted as a police officer without any heroism. His body language and way of investigating have added strength to the character. Heroine Nira has done a good job in the given role.

Rest of the supporting cast including Nizhalgal Ravi, Arul Jothi, Videsh and Sumanth have all done their job well and added strength to the screenplay.

Kalyan Venkatraman’s cinematography captures the proceedings in an exciting manner. K.S. Sundaramurthy’s music, songs and background music suit the story well.

Rest of the technical aspects of the movie are good as well.

Rating: 3.5/5
