Emotional roller coaster
Aelay is about the relationship between a father and son. Parthi (Manikandan) rushes to his hometown after hearing news about the death of his father Muthukutty (Samuthirakani). However, after reaching his house, Parthi does not seem to be much worried about his father’s demise.
We are then told the backstory of Muthukutty, who is an icecream seller in the village. Muthukutty lives his life to the fullest that his kith and kin equally hate and love him.
However, Parthi refuses to talk to him after a point as his dad’s activities constantly embarrass him among his friends and village folks. What happened between the father-son and does Parthi get to know about his dad forms the rest of the story.
Samuthirakani is in superb form. He brings out the right amount of acting needed to depict the character of Muthukutty.
Manikandan is improving with each and every movie. He has given a measured performance. Director Halitha Shameem’s strength lies how she is able to show the different layers of the each character.
Except for the the long first-half the movie is a decent watch. Theni Eshwar’s camera has captured the raw nature of the village. Music by Aruldev and Kaber Vasuki adds more strength to the film.
