Sports-Drama is one of the popular genres which is seen in Kollywood. There are various ways in which the sports based movies are handled in Tamil Cinema and one of the popular themes is the coach-players relationship. Let us take a look at some of the popular Kollywood movies based on this theme.

1. ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’:

Directed by Pa. Ranjith, this sports drama revolves around the boxing culture in North Chennai during the 1970s. The film follows the journey of a young boxer named Kabilan, played by Arya, as he rises through the ranks in the boxing world. It explores themes of rivalry, politics, and personal redemption, with intense boxing sequences and powerful performances. 2. ‘Irudhi Suttru’:

Directed by Sudha Kongara, this Tamil-Hindi bilingual sports drama stars R. Madhavan as a washed-up boxer who becomes a coach. The story revolves around the tumultuous relationship between the coach and his protege, a fiery young woman named Madhi, played by Ritika Singh.

3. ‘Ethir Neechal’:

This R S Durai Senthilkumar directorial stars Sivakarthikeyan as a young man named Kunjithapatham who aspires to break a world record. The story takes a humorous approach to depict Kunjithapatham’s journey of self-discovery and his transformation from an underdog to a confident achiever. Nandhita plays the role of Sivakarthikeyan’s coach and the second plot of the movie is about the redemption of Nandhita as an athlete.

4. ‘Bigil’:

Directed by Atlee, Vijay  is seen in dual roles as a gangster and a football coach. The narrative revolves around a women’s football team coached by the protagonist, Michael, who aims to fulfill his friend’s dream of winning the championship. The film blends sports drama with elements of action, emotion, and social commentary, focusing on empowerment, teamwork, and women’s rights.

5. ‘ M Kumaran: Son of Mahalakshmi’:

This Tamil family drama directed by M Raja features Jayam Ravi as Kumaran, a young man who aspires to become a professional boxer. The story delves into the conflicts between generations and the pursuit of one’s passion despite familial opposition. Prakash Raj appears as Jayam Ravi’s father and coach. It combines elements of sports, romance, and family dynamics, with themes of perseverance, sacrifice, and reconciliation.
