Ponniyin Selvan I

– Review

Prakash Raj is ailing Chola King and has announced his eldest son, Vikram as the crown prince.
However, the people of the Chola kingdom and Prakash Raj’s second child, Trisha , think that her younger brother, Jayam Ravi will make a great king.
Meanwhile, Vikram sends his friend Karthi to Kadambur to find out the plan that’s brewing and report it to Prakash Raj and Trisha.
Meanwhile, Prakash Raj’s brother’s son Rahman has his eyes on the throne.
Also, Aiswharya Rai waits for the right time to take her revenge on the Chola dynasty.
How this all turns out forms the crux of PS-I. Director Mani Ratnam takes his own sweet time to establish the characters.
There are several moments that keep the audience engaged.
Maniratnam’s storytelling is well complemented by Ravi Varman’s camera and AR Rahman’s background score.
Vikram as Aditha Karikalan is terrific with an impeccable screen presence and command of the story. Karthi as Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan is in top form.
Both Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha are exquisitely beautiful and play their characters to perfection.
The dialogues are sharp, especially between Karthi and Jayaram. Rest of the cast have also done their part well.

Rating: 4/5
