Silence in louder

“Kottukaali”

– Review

Anna Ben is in love with a man, but it is not Soori who she is betrothed to. Anna Ben refuses to speak and react to her surroundings, adding to the grouse of her family members.

Her silence and motionless stature irk everyone, leading them to believe it is a work of black magic.

They embark on a road trip to a shaman who can ward off the evil. What happens next forms the core plot of the movie.

Director PS Vinothraj’s ‘Kottukkaali’ is evocative and arresting. Without many dialogues, Vinothraj effectively portrays how the men in the village, including Soori, are living a life under the shackles of so-called cultural norms.

Anna Ben and Soori play their roles brilliantly. Soori has delivered yet another top notch performance. He fits in the role like a T and the way he has carried his role is appreciable.

Anna Ben stands tall in her character. She delivers a silent yet powerful performance.

She is largely expressionless, but that conveys a lot of emotions.

The supporting characters and their performances transport you to their world.

‘Kottukkaali’ doesn’t have any music. The ambient sounds act as background score. Cinematography by Sakthi captures the essence of the movie in a raw manner.

Rating: 4.1/5
