Vikram shines in this period drama
‘Thangalaan’
– Movie Review
The movie is set in 1850 in Veppur village of North Arcot. A group of tribals headed by their chief Vikram are employed by British officer Daniel Caltagirone to trace the gold in their village, which is now known by the name KGF (Kolar Gold Fields).
However, in the process the group earns the wrath of the local sorceress Malavika Mohanan, resulting in a conflict between the tribal group and the mystical force.
Vikram has experienced the fierce power of Malavikka on an earlier sojourn to mine gold but he believes that this time will be different.
With Vikram leading the way, the group heads to Kolar with Daniel to see if they can find gold. Now, does Vikram find gold? Does the story of Malavikka turn out to be a myth? Does Daniel help the tribals get a better life?
Director Pa Ranjith has given a period film that is intertwined with some fantasy and mystical realism.
The characters and the setting are raw and rustic and it adds to the allure of this drama which is based on the Kolar gold fields and the labourers who worked there.
Thangalaan has a great new concept and fine performances. Vikram and Parvathy as the couple Thangalaan and Gangamma steal the show.
Their performances drive the narrative, and the evolving relationship between their characters is a force that constantly pushes Thangalaan to know the ambitions of other characters.
Whether it is the emotional scenes or the action ones, Vikram makes you feel every emotion he goes through. Parvathy and Pasupathy are excellent as well.
Malavika Mohanan has breathed life into her character and has delivered a spell bounding performance.
Rest of the actors have also done their part well. Music director GV Prakash’s tunes and BGM for the film are top notch.
‘Thangalaan’ is definitely a visual extravaganza – right from the costumes to the make-up. Cinematography by A Kishor Kumar is a big plus for the movie.
