While she was the lady superstar when she was a busy actress, Jayalalithaa, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, continues to dominate the film industry even after her death.

For, while three bio-pics on her are currently in the making, a few more are in the pipeline. And, top names are involved in all of them. This week, as part of’s Friday Special Article series, let’s have a look at the films being made on the life of ‘Amma’.


The first look poster of the web series on Jayalalithaa, directed by Gautham Vasuev Menon, was unveiled recently. Titled ‘Queen’, Ramya Krishnan will be essaying Jayalalithaa’s role in this biopic.

The web series will be streaming on OTT platform MX Player and it has been co-directed by Prasath Murugesan of ‘Kidari’ fame. According to sources, besides the real life story, it will also have a fictional take on the character.

Malayalam actor Indrajith Sukumaran is expected to play the role of matinee idol-turned-AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran (MGR) in the project. The first look, which has Ramya Krishnan addressing a huge gathering in typical Jayalalithaa style, has created expectations on the bio-pic.


Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut will play the role of  Jayalalithaa in a film titled ‘Thalaivi’.  The biopic directed by Vijay will be made in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, and the same title, despite it being a Tamil word, will be used in Telugu and Hindi too.

In fact, it was Kangana who has requested the filmmakers to title the Hindi version Thalaivi as well expressing her respect towards the leader’s language.

According to sources, Kangana had put on hold plans to film her own bio-pic and chose instead play the role of Jayalalithaa because the actor-turned-politician’s life inspired her and it was a huge success story. It is also learnt that Kangana is learning Bharatanatyam and other things to get her act right as Jayalalithaa.


A Priyadarshini, an associate of Mysskin, is working on a bio-pic on Jayalalithaa titled ‘The Iron Lady’, with Nithya Menen playing the main role. Nithya Menen’s look as Jayalalithaa was shared on the occasion of the leader’s death anniversary and it was received well.

Priyadharshini had said in a statement, “For the last four months, we were discussing and working on the making of a film on the Iron Lady, who is still alive in the hearts of millions of Tamils. We are proud of this venture and at the same time, we consider this our duty and tribute to the lady who lived an exceptional life. This film has been planned to reach people in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages.”

It is rumoured that Varalakshmi Sarathkumar will be essay the role of Sasikala, Jayalalithaa’s constant companion and close confidante. In the first look, Nithya looks like Jayalalitha at the beginning of her political career.


One K Jagadeeswara Reddy has announced a bio-pic titled ‘Sasi Lalithaa’ on Jayalalithaa.  The movie to be made in Telugu and Tamil indicates that it would talk about the proximity between Jayalalithaa and her close aide V K Sasikala.

“This will be a realistic take on Jayalalithaa’s life since Jagadeeswara Reddy personally knows her and has also made indepth research on the late leader,” sources said. The first look poster of the movie was released recently.


The name of Lingusamy was proposed as the director of a Jayalalithaa bio-pic by none other than Jeyananth Dhivakaran, nephew of TTV Dhinakaran and son of Sasikala’s brother Dhivakaran.

He said Lingusamy would make the biopic most likely and he would get inputs from senior political leaders. Jeyananth further said that the roles played by Sasikala and her husband Natarajan would be given prominence in the film.

Also, it is said veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja might also make a bio-pic on Jayalalithaa.
