With veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja and some others in Tamil cinema going ahead with their plan to float a new association for producers, Kalaipuli S Thanu has requested the senior director not to break the existing Tamil Film Producers Council.
Thanu said, “Let Bharathiraja be the President of Tamil Film Producers Council but for the other posts, we can conduct elections. He can do all the good things to the council and let it be the golden period of Tamil cinema.
I wouldn’t blame Bharathiraja, when I spoke to him over the phone, he told me that the final decision would be taken only after consulting with all the producers. But it looks like, four producers are pressurizing him and released a statement, now to create confusion.”
“We have been helping a lot of producers through Tamil Film Producers Council. Starting a new association would ruin the livelihood of many producers,” Thanu said further.
He added that Tamil Film Producers Council(TFPC) was started during MGR and Jayalalithaa’s tenure. Bharathiraja did nothing wrong in the current situation, if he comes back he will be selected for the post of the president without choices. We have so much respect for him. Few other producers have also requested Bharathiraja to dissolve the new association.
K Rajan has questioned the need to come up with a separate body when the industry has come to standstill now. He came down heavily on the decision to start the new association, and asked Bharathiraja to dissolve it as a mark of respect to TFPC.
In his statement, Bharathiraja said, “A new council is the need of the hour. It has been years since we even functioned. It is crucial to find the answers to pressing issues like the state of the films that are yet to be released and the uncertain challenges of the future.” Clarifying that his intention is not to break up the parent organisation, he added, “Please do not think that we are dividing and conquering. We are eager to work towards positive changes. It is high time we act. Contemplating our next move forever isn’t going to help us.”
He stated that the new producers’ council will be launched officially soon. “An announcement about the members of the council will be made soon. We are in the process of recruiting members.”
