‘Hey Ram’, one of the classics of Kamal Haasan, completed 20 years of its release on Tuesday. The actor-filmmaker, who is now a politician as the founder-president of Makkal Needhi Maiam, remembered ‘Hey Ram’ anniversary in his typical style.
In a tweet, Kamal said, “20 years of Hey Ram. Glad we made that film in time. Sad the apprehensions and warnings the film spoke about are coming true. We must surmount these challenges to the harmony of this country and we shall. Hum honge kaamiyaab. நாளை நமதே.”
Directed by Kamal Haasan with great musical score by Ilayaraja, the film is a period drama set during the Partition of India. It is an alternate historical film that depicts India’s Partition and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse. The Hindi version was distributed by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.
The film was screened at the International Film Festival of India and selected by Film Federation of India as its submission to the Oscars in the year 2000, but was not nominated. The film has garnered three National Film Awards. Internationally, the film was screened at the 25th Toronto International Film Festival and at the 2000 Locarno Festival.
