Vaanam Kottattum

– Review

When director Dhanasekaran aka Dhana made his debut with ‘Padaiveeran’, his making style was talked about. Now, with his second film ‘Vaanam Kottatum’, he has set his foot firm in many aspects.

In association with his mentor Mani Ratnam (who has co-written the script besides producing the movie), Dhana has presented a gripping family tale, that loses the fizz only towards the climax.

Bose Kaalai (Sarathkumar) goes to prison after murdering a man who tries to bump off his brother (Balaji Sakthivel).

Following this, his wife Chandra (Radikaa) relocates to Chennai with her children, since she doesn’t want her son and daughter to be raised amid violence.

In the city, her son Selva (Vikram Prabhu) becomes a small time businessman in Koyambedu, while daughter Mangai (Aishwarya Rajesh) studies law and helps Selva in his business.

After 16 years, Bose Kaalai comes out of jail and reaches Chennai to be with his family. But the reception he faces is unexpected. He also brings danger in the form of Baskaran (Nandaa), who is the son of the man murdered by Bose.

Terrific performance by the Sarathkumars hold the film high. Vikram Prabhu and Aishwarya Rajesh have lived the roles, while the likes of Shanthanu, Madonna Sebastian, Nandaa and Kalyan add value.

Technical departments and music (songs by Sid Sriram are great) are the other major highlights of ‘Vaanam Kottattum’. The negative points however are slow screenplay and predictable scenes. But still, ‘Vaanam Kottattum’ would find a place in your heart.

Rating: 3 out of 5
