CAA protests: Rajinikanth calls for peace, says he is pained

Super Star Rajinikanth has expressed anguish over the protests against the Central government’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) taking a violent turn.

“Violence and rioting should not become a way to find a solution for any issue. I request the people of India to stay united and vigilant keeping in mind the nation’s security and welfare. The ongoing violence gives me great pain,” he said in a tweet.

Rajinikanth’s tweet came hours after Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka were rocked by violence during protests against the amended Citizenship Act, with two persons being killed in Mangaluru in police firing. Agitations took place in Chennai too, but they were peaceful.

The superstar’s tweet has become the top trend of Twitter, with many supporting him for appealing for calm, at a time when a few political leaders were trying to ‘milk the situation by instigating protests’.

The protests against CAA intensified after crackdown on Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University students that took place on December 15.
