Friday the 13th – F’day Spl. Article by Naveen

‘Friday the 13th’ is an American horror franchise that comprises twelve slasher films, a television series, novels, comic books, video games, and tie‑in merchandis. Back home in Kollywood, this Friday, which is December 13, as many as 13 films are slated for release.

While trade analysts say this is not good for the industry since such a mad rush in the box-office would only end up in many films vanishing without creating any impact, makers of small budget films feel that they are left with no other choice since ‘big films’ are slated for release in the coming weeks. Let’s have a look on what are those films:

Erode Soundar, who wrote story and dialogues for films like ‘Cheran Pandian’, ‘Nattamai’ and ‘Samuthiram’, has directed ‘Ayya Ullen Ayya’. He had earlier directed films like ‘Simmarasi’. Playing the lead role in the movie is Kabilesh, grandson of Erode Soundar.

He is introducing his brother’s Bala Sabareesan as anatgonist in the movie. Prarthana is the heroine. She had acted in several Malayalam movies. Manobala, Bawa Lakshmanan, Nalini, Livingston are also in the cast. Chandru cranks camera while music is by Mahendran.

‘Capmaari’ is directed by S A Chandrasekhar starring Jai, Vaibhavi Shandilya and Athulya Ravi in lead roles. Music for the movie is composed by Siddharth Vipin.

The movie said to be an adult comedy of sorts. ‘Capmaari’, referred to as CM, is will mark the return of Vijay’s father SAC to direction after four years. He has also written the story, screenplay and dialogues of this film. This will be his 70th venture, while it is the 25th film for Jai.

Sathyan, Devadarshini, Livingstone, Power Star Srinivasan and Sidharath Vipin have played important roles in the movie.

‘Champion’ will be a comeback movie for me, says director Suseenthiran. It is his fourth sports film after ‘Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’, ‘Jeeva’ and ‘Kennedy Club’. ‘Champion’ stars newcomer Vishwa, Mrinalini Ravi, Narain, Manoj Bharathiraja and Stunt Siva in key roles.

The movie has debutant Vishwa in the lead role while ‘Anjathe’ fame Narain, ‘Super Deluxe’ fame Mrinalini Ravi and Manoj Bharathiraja are playing important roles in the film. Music for the film is composed by Arrol Corelli. The camera for the film is cranked by Sujith Sarang while editing is handled by Thiyagu.

The entire project was shot in and around Chennai and said to deal with North Madras’s connection with sports. The film is bankrolled by Kalanjiyam Cine Arts.

‘Chennai 2 Bangkok’ movie is tipped to be a comedy and action entertainer, produced by Jai Balaji Movie makers. Written and directed by Sathish Santhosh, the film has Jai Akash, Yogibabu, Chaams, Powerstar Srinivasan, Ponnambalam, Kumki Aswin, Soni Charista and Yazhini in key roles.

After a brief hiatus, actor Bharath will be donning the greasepaint in ‘Kaalidas’. Directed by ‘Nalaya Iyakkunar’ fame Shri Senthil, Kalidas also features Ann Sheetal, Aadhav Kannadasan, Suresh Menon and others playing crucial characters in the film.

The makers had recently released a sneak peek from the film, which featured a major investigation scene where the policemen (played by Suresh Menon and Bharath) examine a cadaver.

‘Karuthukualai Pathivu Sei’ was recently in the news, after veteran actor-director K Bhagyaraj made some controversial comments at the audio launch of the movie.

‘Karuthukalai Pathivu Sei’ is a film based on the Pollachi sexual assault case, where a gang of men had allegedly tried to strip a woman in a car, and then attempted to shoot a video of her. They also blackmailed her with the visuals, demanding money.

In January 2017, thousands of citizens gathered on Marina beach in Chennai to protest the Supreme Court ban on the bull-taming sport of jallikattu. A film that captures the protests is ‘Marina Puratchi’.

MS Raj’s fiction-documentary hybrid Marina Puratchi was granted a U certificate recently. Model-turned-actress Shruti Reddy is thrilled by her experience of playing a sensitive role in ‘Marina Puratchi’.

The film, based on the spontaneous and largely peaceful mass agitation favouring Jallikattu staged mostly on Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach, was denied censor certification multiple times and finally, the court had to intervene to resolve the issue.

Director Eswar has come out with a movie titled ‘Thedu’ that speaks about travails of youngsters today. The movie features Sanjay and Meghna in lead roles.

According to Eswar, “Thedu revolves around a drunkard, another possessed by selfie and a lover couple. They face lot of problems because of their actions. How they overcome it forms the crux.” Besides bankrolling the movie, Sivakasi Murugesan plays a powerful antagonist in the film. Vijay TV fame Prabhakaran, Kamala and Swamidass are also in the cast.

‘Thirupathisamy Kudumbam’ is directed by Suresh Shanmugam and will feature Aishwarya Lakshmi, Devadarshini and Jahin as lead characters.

Movies including ’50 Roova’, ‘Kaila’, ‘Manguni Pandiyargal’ are also slated for release this weekend.
