CM hits out at Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan

Apparently irked by the trend of actors entering politics, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday lashed out at top stars Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.

Speaking to reporters in Salem, he said, “We all know how popular Sivaji Ganesan was as an actor. He was considered on par with MGR. But when he started a political party, we saw what was its fate and how he was defeated in elections. Actors who turn politicians would meet a similar fate.”

Hitting out at Kamal Haasan, he said, “Why didn’t he contest the two bypolls? How many votes did he get in the recently held Lok Sabha elections? He is 66 years old and doesn’t get the right opportunities in the film industry anymore. Hence, he started a party.”

Asked about superstar Rajinikanth’s recent comment that there was scope for strong leadership in the state, the CM said the actor should first enter the field before commenting on the political scenario. “There is no vacuuum in the state as has been proved by the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the recently held by-polls,” he added.

Continuing his jibe, Palaniswami said, “What welfare have the actors done for the people? They continue to act in films and increase their income. They are trying to portray they have huge support amongst the people.”

On Monday too, Palaniswami criticised Rajinikanth for his remark that there was a management vacuum in Tamil Nadu, saying he was simply an actor and never a political chief. “Whereas no political chief claimed a vacuum, the comment got here solely from the actor”, he had said.
