Super hero films are a routine in Hollywood. Movies on Batman, Spiderman, Captain Marvel, Avengers, Aquaman, Superman, X-Men and the list goes on. However, as far as Kollywood is concerned, such films come only once in a while due to various reasons, including the huge budget the genre demands.
But all hopes are not lost, as Sivakarthikeyan’s upcoming film ‘Hero’ attempts to fill the gap. Going by the teaser which was recently unveiled (a single from the movie was released Wednesday evening) and what sources close to the unit say, the movie is a super hero story being made on a lavish budget. While the film is expected to hit the screens in the coming weeks, Mykollywood.com takes a look at some super hero films made in Tamil in the past.
‘Velayudham’ is a 2011 vigilante action written and directed by M Raja. It stars Vijay in the lead titular role opposite Hansika Motwani with Abhimanyu Singh as the main antagonist alongside Genelia D’Souza, Saranya Mohan and Santhanam in supporting roles.
The film revolves around a villager who arrives in the city to collect money and is persuaded by a journalist to take on the disguise of Velayudham, a superhero, to eradicate the evils pertaining within the society such as corruption and terrorism. It is inspired by the 2000 Telugu film ‘Azad’.
Tom Delmar, the stunt co-ordinator of projects such as ‘Braveheart’, was behind the shooting of an extremely tricky train sequence for ‘Velayudham’. It was shot on a train moving on a bridge Vijay performed the risky sequence coolly.
‘Kanthaswamy’ is a 2009 superhero film written and directed by Susi Ganesan starring Vikram as the titular character. Shriya Saran, Prabhu, Krishna, Ashish Vidyarthi, Mukesh Tiwari, Mansoor Ali Khan, Vadivelu, and Y G Mahendran form the supporting cast.
The film’s soundtrack and background score were composed by Devi Sri Prasad. The film’s soundtrack was released on 17 May 2009 and the film was released on 21 August 2009 to average reviews.
The film’s plot revolves around Kanthaswamy (Vikram), a CBI income tax officer, and his friends, granting the wishes of the needy who write letters to a local Lord Muruga temple by disguising Kanthaswamy as an anthropomorphic rooster.
The film was dubbed and simultaneously released as ‘Mallanna’ in Telugu and was later dubbed into Hindi as ‘Temper 2’ by Goldmines Telefilms (2018) and does not feature the song ‘Meow Meow’. It was remade in Bengali as ‘Most Welcome’, starring Ananta, Barsha.
‘Anniyan’ is a 2005 vigilante action film written and directed by S Shankar and produced by V. Ravichandran of Aascar Films. The plot centres on a disillusioned everyman whose frustration at what he sees as increasing social apathy and public negligence leads to a split personality that attempts to right the system.
Vikram stars as Ambi, an idealistic, law-abiding lawyer who has multiple personality disorder and develops two other identities: a metrosexual fashion model named Remo, and a murderous vigilante named Anniyan. Sadha plays his love interest, Nandini. Actors Vivek, Prakash Raj, Nedumudi Venu and Nassar also feature in the film.
Originally filmed in Tamil, and released simultaneously in the four South Indian states on 17 June 2005, the film was dubbed into Telugu as ‘Aparichithudu’ and in Hindi as ‘Aparichit’ was released a year later on 19 May 2006. Further, the film was also dubbed into French and released in French-speaking countries worldwide by Columbia Tristar.
‘Mugamoodi’ is a 2012 superhero film written and directed by Mysskin that features Jiiva, Pooja Hegde and Narain in lead roles, while Girish Karnad, Nassar, and Selva play supporting roles.
The film is about a man who cannot tolerate injustice and corruption and hence turns into a vigilante to fight against it for a better society. This film was dedicated to Bruce Lee. With mixed critical response the film was released on 31 August 2012, along with its dubbed Telugu version titled ‘Mask’. It has also been dubbed in Hindi as ‘Mahabali Ek Super Hero’.
