In a last minute twist, the Tamil Nadu government, which initially said no to early morning special shows of Deepavali releases, Vijay-starrer ‘Bigil’ and Karthi-starrer ‘Kaithi’, gave permission on Thursday night, much to the joy of producers, distributors and theatre owners.
Thanking the government, ‘Bigil’ producer Archana Kalpathi said in a tweet: “A big thank you to our honourable CM and the Government of TamilNadu for allowing special shows for this Diwali Weekend ”
In another tweet, she said, “Special shows have a big impact in box office revenue. A big thank you to our Honourable CM @CMOTamilNadu Sir, Honourable Deputy CM @OfficeOfOPS Sir and Minister Kadambur Raju Sir for making this happen and recognising the work of thousands of families associated with #Bigil ”
Following this, ‘Bigil’ special shows started during the wee hours of today and Vijay fans celebrated Deepavali two days in advance. They beat drums, burst crackers, danced in front of theatres and distributed sweets. Meanwhile, Vijay fans also indulged in a protest in Krishnagiri as the show got delayed there. They attacked shops and banners, it is said. Police personnel were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Directed by Atlee, ‘Bigil’, a sports-action drama, has Nayanthara, Indhuja Ravichandran and Jackie Shroff in key roles. Music is by Oscar-Grammy winner A R Rahman. The film created huge expectations and also had its share of controversies before its release.
