Tamil cinema’s affinity with cricket is often reflected in films. Movies including ‘Chennai 600028′ spoke about youngsters’ passion for the sport, while ‘Potta Potti’ and ‘Chithiram Pesuthadi 2’ featured cricketers themselves- Sadagoppan Ramesh and West Indies player Dwayne Bravo, respectively.
Even as Jiiva is playing the role of Kris Srikkanth in ’83’, a film on Indian’s world cup victory, and Vijay Sethupathi playing the lead in a biopic on Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, more cricketers are making their way to Kollywood. Here’s a special report:
Irfan Pathan has announced that he is all set to make his acting debut in a Tamil movie starring Vikram. The film will be directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu who has helmed films like ‘Demonte Colony’ and ‘Imaikkaa Nodigal’ in the past. The film will have music by Oscar-Grammy winner A R Rahman.
Pathan posted a video with a caption which read: “New venture, new challenge looking forward to it”. Tentatively called ‘Vikram 58’, the film will see Irfan playing the role of a police officer. The cricketer, who is now a commentator, is excited about the new assignment.
“When the director approached me, my first question was, ‘Why me?’. He explained that the role suited me perfectly and that they were keen on casting me,” Irfan told Sportstar. He added: ““It took me a little time to make up my mind. And once I was convinced, I gave a go ahead. I have never acted in a film before, so yeah, it is a new challenge,”
The movie’s producer Seven Screen Studio tweeted: “Proud and honoured to introduce @IrfanPathan in #ChiyaanVikram58 in a super stylish action avatar!! Welcome on Board Sir and Wish you a sensational debut🏻#IrfanPathan #BCCI@AjayGnanamuthu @Lalit_SevenScr @arrahman @sooriaruna @iamarunviswa @proyuvraaj @LokeshJey.”
Harbhajan Singh will make his debut in a film titled ‘Dikkiloona’. Harbhajan will be seen alongside Santhanam in this flick, which is to tipped to be a fun-filled entertainer.
To be directed by Karthik Yogi, the Harbhajan-Santhanam starrer will have music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. While not revealing much about the cricketer’s character in the film, the director said that this was just one of many surprises in the movie.
For his part, Harbhajan, known for his Tamil tweets, posted on his social media page: “என்னை தமிழ் சினிமாவில் அறிமுகம் செய்யும் @kjr_studios,#dikkiloona @SoldiersFactory,@iamsanthanam குழுவுக்கு நன்றி.#தலைவர் #தல #தளபதி உருவாகிய பூமி.#தமிழ் வார்த்தைகளால் வார்த்திட்ட என்னை தூக்கி நிறுத்திய உறவுகளே.உங்களால் வெள்ளித்திரையில்.இந்த வளர்ச்சிக்கு காரணம் சரவணன் பாண்டியன்.”
‘Dikkiloona’ is bankrolled by ‘Balloon’-director KS Sinish, under his production company Soldiers’ Factory, in association with KJR Studios. The flick is slated to hit the screens in summer 2020.
Sreesanth, who had earlier acted in Malayalam and Kannada films, is all set to debut in Tamil with Hansika’s upcoming female-centric horror comedy to be directed by Hari-Harish duo. He is said to be playing the villain in this flick.
According to reports, the yet untitled project is an action film with all the elements of a masala entertainer, and Hansika Motwani will be doing fight sequences in it
P Ranganathan is producing the film under the banner Sri Vaari Films, which is known for Yogi Babu’s ‘Dharmaprabhu’. It may be recalled that Hari-Harish duo earlier did ‘Ambuli’ and ‘Aaah’.
In an earlier interview, Sreesanth had said that he wants to play negative roles to big stars in Tamil. He had also acted as a baddie in a Kannada film.
