The last rites of former Finance and Defence Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who passed away on Saturday, were performed with full state honours on Sunday at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi.
Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu, veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, party’s working president JP Nadda, and several Ministers were present at the ghat.
Jaitley’s son Rohan performed the last rites at the Nigambodh Ghat. Jaitley, 66, ailing for the past several months, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Saturday. He was admitted to AIIMS on August 9, and was on life support for the past couple of weeks.
In his condolence message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on foreign tour, said, “Arun Jaitley Ji was a political giant, towering intellectual and legal luminary. He was an articulate leader who made a lasting contribution to India. His passing away is very saddening. Spoke to his wife Sangeeta Ji as well as son Rohan, and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.”
He added: “My friend Arun Jaitley loved India, loved his party and loved being among people. It is upsetting and unbelievable that a person I have known since our youth is no longer in our midst. I pay my tributes to him.”
