Veteran Telugu-Tamil actress-filmmaker Vijaya Nirmala died in Hyderabad on Thursday. She was 75 and is survived by husband and legendary Telugu actor Krrishna, son Naresh, who is also a popular Telugu actor and grandchildren.
In a tweet, Naresh said, “I regret to inform you that my mother, senior artiste, prominent producer and director Dr.A G Vijaya Nirmala passed away during early hours today, that is, 27.6.2019, at Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad, due to sickness. She was 75.”
He added: “Her body will be kept at our residence from 11 a.m. Final rites will be held tomorrow (Friday).” Born in Tamil Nadu in 1946, she began her career as a child actor aged just four with ‘Machcha Rekhai’ in Tamil in 1950.
At the age of 11, she made her debut in Telugu movies with ‘Panduranga Mahatyam’. Her first big break as an actor was in Malayalam with Prem Nazir in ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’ in 1964. In 1969, she married her co-star Krishna who has been her constant companion.
Vijay Nirmala, who has directed 44 films, was a visionary filmmaker. She holds a Guinness Record for most number of films directed by a female filmmaker.
In 2008, she was conferred with Raghupathi Venkaiah Award for her contribution to the Telugu film industry.
