Hours after superstar Rajinikanth announced on Sunday that he would not contest in Lok Sabha elections, his friend and Makkal Needhi Maiam president Kamal Haasan launched a tirade against him for his decision.
“This is something like a wrestler who gears up for a showdown but suddenly backtracks. If you refuse to eat after the banana leaf is laid out with a spread of dishes claiming you are on diet, would not anyone ask why you had come to the dining table?” Kamal said at a function in Chennai.
He said that people will not respect leaders if they form a party and then abstain from contesting in elections “One should contest in the Lok Sabha election for the betterment of Tamil Nadu,” Kamal added.
He further said: After oiling one’s body and slapping of thighs, one should not back out from the wrestling field saying he would come the next day.
On Sunday, Rajini made his stand clear on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, by stating that Rajini Makkal Mandram would neither contest in the polls nor support any party.
In a statement, he said, “I will not contest the Parliament election. I request all kindly not to use my pictures for campaign purposes.”
Stating that his target is only the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, he urged RMM office bearers, fans and public to cast their votes to the person who would provide a permanent solution to the water issues plaguing Tamil Nadu.
“Tamil Nadu’s main problem has been water scarcity. Think wisely and vote for the people who will provide a stable government in the Centre and provide a permanent solution to the state’s water crisis,” he added.
