After crossing all hurdles, Ilayaraja-75, an event by Tamil Film Producers Council to honour the music maestro, was successfully conducted in Chennai on Saturday and Sunday.
While Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit took part in the inaugural on Saturday, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, superstar Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and other top stars participated on Sunday.
Rahman, who described Ilayaraja as ‘head master’, recalled the days when he worked with the ‘Isaignani’. The Oscar-Grammy winner also performed for a couple of Ilayaraja’s songs.
In his address, Rajini said, “I am drawn to Ilayaraja’s spirituality as much as I love his music. That’s why I still call him ‘Swamy’. From his first film, ‘Annakili’, till today, his musical vibration reigns supreme,’ the superstar said, and added in a lighter vein that Ilayaraja had given more super hits to Kamal Haasan than him.
For his part, Kamal performed many Ilayaraja songs on stage, much to the delight of the audience. Director Mani Ratnam said, “It has been a big honour to have worked with him. He will always remain a genius.”
