The new year is here and 2019 promises a lot for Tamil cinema, especially with many much-awaited movies getting ready to hit the screens. The race will start from Pongal itself and is likely to continue till the end of the year.
As part of its weekly special series, Mykollywood.com lists out some of the eagerly expected films of 2019. Fasten your seatbelts to enjoy the ‘trailers’.
This is the latest offering from the superstar, who continues to dominate the box-office for four decades. Tipped to be an action film that will show the vintage Rajini, ‘Petta’ is written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by Kalanithi Maran under his production studio Sun Pictures.
The film stars Rajinikanth with an ensemble cast including Vijay Sethupathi, Simran, Trisha, M Sasikumar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bobby Simha, Mahendran and Guru Somasundaram.
Songs, teaser and trailer of the movie have gone viral and Rajini fans are getting ready to celebrate the release of ‘Petta’ as a grand festival this Pongal.
Ajith is back after a gap of almost two years, with ‘Viswasam’. After ‘Veeram’, ‘Vedhalam’ and ‘Vivegam’, he has teamed up with director Shiva once again for this movie produced by Sathya Jyothi Films.
‘Viswasam’ promises to be a rural commercial family entertainer. Nayanthara plays the heroine, while music has been composed by D Imman.
The collaboration between Sathya Jyothi Films director Siva and Ajith Kumar was announced via the studio’s official Twitter handle in late November 2017, after months of speculation on Ajith’s next project. Nayanthara was announced as the lead actress in early February 2018. Ajith fans, known for showing ‘mass’, are all ready to welcome ‘Viswasam’ this Pongal.
This yet untitled film marks the return of Vijay and director Atlee after ‘Theri’ and ‘Mersal’. Nayanthara, who is having a dream run in her second innings, has been roped in as the heroine of this movie, fondly called as ‘Thalapathi 63’.
The Vijay-starrer is tipped to see the light of the day for Deepavali 2019. The movie will be produced on a grand budget by AGS Entertainment.
The movie will have music by A R Rahman. In a statement, the production house said, “AGS Entertainment is pleased to announce our next project with Thalapathy Vijay. It has been a much awaited project for us and we are extremely happy and excited to work with Thalapathy Vijay. This will be our 20th production and biggest till date.”
“Thalapathy 63 promises to be a PAKKA MASS family entertainer with a large cast, superior technical crew and the best of production value. The project tentatively titled #Thalapathy63 will be directed by Atlee and produced by Kalpathi S Aghoram, Kalpathi S Ganesh and Kalpathi S Suresh,” it added.
The title of this Suriya-K V Anand film was announced on New Year day. Written by Pattukkottai Prabakar, the movie is produced by Lyca Productions and stars Suriya in the lead with Mohanlal, Arya and Boman Irani playing pivotal roles.
According to sources, Suriya plays an army officer on a mission in this movie. “How he thwarts the attempts of evil forces who want to destroy the nation is the crux of the story,” sources add.
Known for going the extra mile to get his act right, the ‘Singam’ and ‘7aum Arivu’ star had recently called on NSG officials in Noida and taken inputs from them.
Narrating the experience on social media, he said, “It will be a life time memory to have witnessed the patriotic n cordial side of Brigadier Gautham Ganguly! Thank you for the warm welcome sir! My special respects to Mrs.Parveen Ganguly, Hats off to all at #NSG.”
On meeting DIG Shalin, he wrote: “Dear Mr Shalin IPS DIG sir you made me feel like we knew each other for more than a decade, Owe you for all the guidance and Love..! #NSG.’ Sayyeshaa Sehgal is the heroine of this flick.
‘Dev’ is an action adventure thriller film based on road adventure written and directed by Rajath Ravishankar on his directorial debut.
The film stars Karthi and Rakul Preet Singh in the main lead while Prakash Raj, Vamsi Krishna and Ramya Krishnan play supportive and pivotal roles in the film.
Harris Jayaraj has been roped into score music for the film while cinematography is handled by R Velraj and editing is done by Anthony L Ruben. The film marks the first collaboration between Karthi and Harris Jayaraj.
Sivakarthikeyan and Nayanthara are playing lead roles in a yet untitled Tamil movie directed by Rajesh M. The film is being produced by K E Gnanavelraja of Studio Green.
The title and the first look of the film will be unveiled most likely for Pongal. Hiphop Tamizha is scoring the music for the movie, which is said to be a comedy entertainer.
‘Super Deluxe’ is written and directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja of Aaranya Kaandam fame. It is produced by Tyler Durden And Kino Fist, in association with East West Dream Works Entertainment & Alchemy Vision Workz.
It features Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Akkineni and Ramya Krishnan as leads in separate segments while Mysskin, Gayathrie, Naveen Vikram, Jackson Joy and Bagavathi Perumal are also in this movie.
P S Vinod and Nirav Shah are handling cinematography, while Yuvan Shankar Raja is the music director. Directors Nalan Kumarasamy, Neelan and Mysskin are reportedly co-writers.
ENNAI NOKKI PAAYUM THOTTA
The movie is written, directed and produced by Gautham Vasudev Menon. The film features Dhanush and Megha Akash in the lead roles.
Production began in March 2016, but had been delayed due to certain unavoidable reasons. The movie is expected to see the light of the day this year.
‘Kadaram Kondan’ is an action thriller film directed by Rajesh Selva and produced by Kamal Haasan. The film stars Vikram and Akshara Haasan.
On 30 August 2018, Kamal Haasan announced an untitled film which he would produce under his banner Raaj Kamal Films International, with Rajesh Selva directing, while Vikram and Akshara Haasan would star.
Srinivas R Gutha was announced as the cinematographer. The film, which would be co-produced by Trident Arts, began filming on the same day.
The film’s title ‘Kadaram Kondan’ and first look poster were revealed on 6 November, the eve of Kamal Haasan’s birthday. The film was shot in Kuala Lumpur for a month, where the shooting scheduled ended in late November.
