Sci-fi, hi-fi – Friday Spl. Article by Naveen

Amid huge expectations, superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘2.0’ directed by Shankar has hit the screens Thursday. A sci-fi flick, it is a spiritual sequel to 2010’s ‘Enthiran’, which itself is a science fiction movie.
Tamil cinema industry is a pioneer in the whole country for movies of such genre, with sci-fi flicks being rolled out from as early as 1952. Let’s revisit some noted science fiction movies.


A Tamil-American co-production, this 1952 film was about an expedition to find the cause of strange behaviour of animals in an area.
As it turned out, the reason of this abnormal behavior was an invasion of wooly mammoths. This film was the first science fiction film in India and in Tamil Nadu.
Directed by William Berke, the film is a T R Sundaram (The Modern Theatres Ltd) & William Berke Production. It stars Rod Cameron, Cesar Romero, Marie Windsor and M N Nambiar in lead roles.


‘Kalai Arasi’ is a 1963 Tamil-language adventure science fiction-comedy film directed by A Kasilingam. The film features M G Ramachandran, P Bhanumathi and Rajasree in lead roles.
The movie, produced by Sarodi Brothers, had musical score by K V Mahadevan. It is the first in Indian cinema to illustrate a story which describes aliens. In this movie we can see alien abduction, alien weapons, space travel and futuristic technology.


It is a 1973 science fiction film directed by M G Ramachandran and produced by R M Veerappan. The film stars MGR in the lead role, along with M N Nambiar, Manjula, Latha Sethupathi, Chandrakala, Thai actress Metta Roongrat, R S Manohar and others.
MGR played scientist Murugan, who has a formula that can harness energy from lightening. A rival wants it for his evil plans. When Murugan disappears, his brother goes around the world to find him and save the world.
It was the first indian movie to break the record collection of English Movie ‘Meckenna’s Gold’ in a single theatre Devi Paradise.


Penned by Sujatha, starring Kamal Haasan and produced by himself, ‘Vikram’ is a 1986 science fiction, action and adventure film, which revolves around the ICBM, advanced computers and security systems, which were near future projects of Indian government.
It was also the first film in India to feature most advanced weapons of those times. Directed by Rajasekhar, the film has Sathyaraj, Amjad Khan, Ambika, Dimple Kapadia, Lizy, Charuhasan and Janagaraj in key roles.
The first Indian movie to use computer for recording the songs, the film was adapted from novel of same name written by Sujatha.


It is a 1989 science fiction horror film written and directed by Velu Prabhakaran. The film was produced by Thakkali Srinivasan under the banner Perfect Productions. Premi – Srini composed the music for the film.
It stars Ajay Rathnam playing the titular role with Prabhu, Amala and Jaishankar playing the protagonist roles. The film was inspired from the American film ‘Silent Rage’ directed by Michael Miller. The movie was remade in Kannada as ‘Manava 2022’ starring Devaraj.
Set in the 21st century a doctor finds a drug that can give back life to dead upon injecting it to a dead body within 2 hours of death. After testing it on a human subject he discovers that the zombie he created is immortal.


A sequel to ‘Adhisaya Manithan’, it is a 1990 horror film produced by Thakkali C Seenivasan and directed by Velu Prabhakaran. The film has Gouthami in the lead role along with bunch of known faces.


It is a 2004 fantasy comedy film directed, written and produced by S J Surya, who also features in the lead role alongside Simran.
The movie’s plot is adapted from the 1988 Hollywood Tom Hanks starrer ‘Big’. Kiran Rathod and Devayani play supporting roles, while A R Rahman composes the music.
‘New’ is about an 8-year-old boy who is turned into a 28-year-old man by a scientist.


It is a 2008 Indian Tamil science fiction film, directed by K S Ravikumar. It stars Kamal Haasan, who also wrote the screenplay and story of the film, in ten distinct roles.
On 20 December 2004, a bio-technology lab in the USA designs a virus (combination of Marburg and Ebola) intended as a bio-weapon. After understanding its potential, the protagonist, one of the scientists involved, refuses to give the vial containing virus away due to fear of misuse. This story deals with Chaos theory and Butterfly effect of the events that took place in 12th century Tamil Nadu leading to 26th Dec 2004 tsunami.

7aum Arivu

It is a 2011 Indian science fiction-martial arts film written and directed by AR Murugadoss, featuring Suriya and Shruti Haasan in the lead roles and Johnny Tri Nguyen as the main antagonist.
The film begins with the life of Bodhidharma (5th century), a master of martial arts and medical remedies, who is depicted in the film as the son of a great Tamil king of the Pallava Dynasty. In the present, Subha Srinivasan (Shruti Haasan), a Genetic Engineering student researches that Bodhidharma can be brought back to present life if his sample of DNA is matched with another sample of DNA which she finds in Aravind (Suriya) a descendant of Bodhidharma.


‘Ambuli’ is a 2012 Tamil mystery science-fiction thriller film set in the 1970s. It is about a beastly creature created as a part of a program by a British doctor which hunts humans passing the fields around facility.


It is a 2014 Tamil science fiction film directed by Vi Anand. It stars newcomers Praveen Kumar and Anusha Naik alongside Suja Varunee, Swasika and Nassar.
Produced by Vishnu Muralee and Senthil Kumar under the banner of Eye Catch Multi Media, it features music by Vishal Chandrasekhar and cinematography done by G K Prasad.


It is a 2015 science fiction comedy film[2] written and directed by R Ravikumar in his debut feature. The film is jointly produced by Thirukumaran Entertainment and Studio Green, and features Vishnu Vishal and Miya in the lead while Karunakaran, T. M. Karthik and Jayaprakash play supporting roles.
The film received positive reviews from critics and become a SuperHit at the box office.


It is a 2016 science fiction action film, written and directed by Vikram Kumar. The film stars Suriya, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menen.
Suriya had played triple roles in this film. One as a scientist( Dr Sethuraman) and other as his twin brother (Aathreya) and Mani. Its story is based on a watch named ’24’ which is actually a time travel equipment and it leads to a bitter battle between the twin brothers.
